Sports Update

Cricket

The cricket section just managed to hold on to their division 2 status so well done to them for that and we know there are already plans to strengthen their playing staff for next year.

Also there are plans to greatly improve the outfield of the cricket section not only to help the senior players on match days but also to get more juniors to be able to practice at Tows rather than go elsewhere. During the winter there will be indoor net sessions organised and courses for coaches run. Anyone wishing to become a coach for the junior section please contact Cliff Davidson cliff@cedas.co.uk

The main attraction though this weekend was the first game to be played in the National League here at Towcestrians for over 25 years. It was a howling gale and scudding rain on Saturday. Welcome to the rugby season, and welcome to Bedford Athletic, a side who had the better of us on our last 4 encounters!

It didn’t start well as tows played against the wind and rain conceded 2 converted tries in the first 20 minutes. They were up against it! but the Tows never give up and were rewarded with two tries of their own to go into the break 14-12 down.

The elements were now in Tows favor and Tows were soon ahead through a great converted try. However the bonus try proved elusive despite constant pressure.

But what a way to start the new campaign, with a win! Well done boys!

Robbie George, Director of Rugby (and who’s favourite food is curry!!), was heard to be “chuffed” with the result! Our chief rugby correspondent, James Wallis, has the full story on the Rugby website. Or click on the links to see the game split into two halves!

Next week a real challenge again at home (and the week after), against a strong Nuneaton side.

We are charging, in line with all clubs at this level, spectators this season £5 to come in on Matchdays. ALL members, Social, VP’s and playing members of any section who has a membership card will be allowed in free of charge. So if you are not a member or have friends who are not but would like to see quality rugby, please go to the Towcestrians Sports Club Website and “Join Up”. There are a number of great other benefits to being a member such as discounted drinks at the bar…

The Development sides under the guidance of Mark Frost, went to last year’s league champions, Hinckley and although lost, the score line flattered the hosts somewhat. This new reserve team league is a much higher standard for the 2nd’s and will give them plenty of stiff competition which will benefit the whole club. Mark’s reports can also be found on the rugby website.
